How to set up your contractor account on Plane

How do I start my onboarding as a contractor?

Updated today

If your organization invited you to onboard as a contractor on Plane, this guide will walk you through what to expect and how to complete your setup so you can get paid. Contractors must be invited by their employer to start onboarding in Plane; self-sign-up is not supported.

Before you start 📝

Once your employer starts your onboarding, you’ll receive an email invitation to join Plane. After you accept the invitation, you’ll be directed to a dedicated onboarding page that shows only the tasks you need to complete. You won’t see tasks assigned to your employer or admin.

Step 1️⃣: Accept your invitation and create your account

Open the invitation email from Plane and click the "Start setup" link to get started. You’ll be asked to create your Plane account by confirming your email address and creating a password.

Step 2️⃣: Complete your onboarding tasks

On your onboarding page, you may be asked to complete the following tasks:

  1. Provide personal details

Enter your legal name, date of birth, and citizenship. Plane uses this information to set up your contractor profile correctly.

  2. Enter administrative details

You’ll be asked for additional details about how you work, including whether you’re onboarding as an individual or through a business. Depending on your situation, you may also need to provide residency details or tax identifiers.

  3. Add your address

    Enter your primary residential address.

  4. Set up your bank account

Add the bank account you want to receive payments to. This step is required so your organization can pay you through Plane.

  5. Sign your tax form

Plane will automatically generate the correct tax form for you based on the information you entered. This is usually a W-8BEN, W-8BEN-E, or W-9. You’ll be able to review and sign the form in Plane, and it will be stored on your profile for compliance purposes. You also have the option of uploading the form if you already have one filled out.

  6. Sign your agreement

If your organization uses a Plane-generated contractor agreement, you’ll also be asked to review and sign it as one of your onboarding tasks.

FAQs

What happens after I complete my onboarding tasks?

Once all required tasks are completed, your onboarding is complete. At that point, your profile, payment details, and required tax documents are on file, and you’ll be ready to receive payments through Plane. If your organization added you to recurring payroll, you’ll be included in upcoming payroll runs based on their selected pay schedule.

Can my organization complete some steps for me?

In some cases, your organization may be able to fill in certain details on your behalf. However, steps that require your personal signature or attestation must be completed by you directly.

What if I still see the onboarding page after I finish?

No worries! After onboarding is complete, the onboarding page usually remains visible for about 1 week before disappearing automatically.
