Control what Plane Agent can do

Set what Plane Agent can do for everyone in your workspace

Plane Agent can answer questions about your workspace, and it can take action for the people in it: add a team member, record a bonus, decide a time-off request.

By default it only reads and makes proposals for someone to approve. Giving it more than that is up to you. An administrator sets this once, and it covers what the agent can do for everyone in the workspace.

Note: These permissions limit what the agent can do. Each person is still limited to what their own role allows, so allowing the agent to record compensation does not let someone who cannot see salaries record one by asking the agent.

Before you start

You need to be an administrator, and Plane Agent must be turned on in your workspace. To turn it on, find Plane Agent in the Features catalog. Opening the agent while it is off takes you to the same place.

How the agent's permissions work

Each part of Plane the agent can reach gets its own row. Reading is always part of what you choose, and the other actions build on top of it:

  • Read — the agent can look the information up and answer questions about it

  • Request — it can propose a change for a person to approve, but cannot apply it itself

  • Write — it can make the change itself. It will often still show you what it is about to do and wait for your go-ahead, based on the intent of your conversation.

  • Approve — it can accept or reject a change someone has proposed

You pick a combination, not a single action. Each row's menu lists the combinations that make sense for that area, written out, such as Read and request or Read, request, and write.

Deciding (approving, rejecting, or skipping) something that already exists, such as a time-off request, an expense report, or a payroll item, counts as writing in that area. Approve is only for accepting or rejecting a proposal.

Note: Only a few areas support proposals today, so Request appears on very few rows. We are adding it to more of them over time.

Configuring the agent's permissions

Open the agent's settings: click your workspace name at the top of the left sidebar, choose Settings, then Agent under Workspace.

The list arrives already filled in with the agent's current permissions, so there is nothing to set up before you start.

To change what the agent can do:

  1. Find the area you want to change.

  2. Open its menu and choose what the agent should be able to do there.

  3. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.

Changes apply to everyone in the workspace, and take effect on the agent's next reply.

To remove permissions, click the × at the end of a row, and the agent can no longer see that area at all. Use Add to put it back and set its permissions.

Note: The page does not save as you go. If you change a row and navigate away without clicking Save changes, your change is lost.

Reset to the default

Reset, at the top of the page, puts the agent back to reading and proposing only.

  1. Click Reset.

  2. Confirm.

Like any other change here, a reset applies to everyone in the workspace.
