Introduction
A workspace is your top-level Plane account — one login, one team with its own permissions, one billing relationship. An entity is a legal company that lives inside a workspace — the verified payer your payroll and contracts run through. A single workspace can hold multiple entities.
Which one do I need?
Add an entity if you need a second legal payer — a subsidiary, or a company in another jurisdiction — but want to keep the same team and billing managing it. This runs a fresh verification on the new entity only; your members and billing stay shared.
Create a new workspace if you want a fully separate account: its own login, team, and billing. This is a fresh onboarding from scratch.
💡 Please note: A new workspace always comes with its own new entity, an entity can only belong to one workspace, so it can't reuse one you've already verified elsewhere. Creating a new workspace means going through verification again for that entity, even if it's the same legal company as one you already have. Adding an entity to your existing workspace avoids that.
To add a new entity:
Go to Company > Entities.
Click Add entity.
Enter the entity's name and click Create entity.
You'll then be asked to fill in the new entity's business details. Our Onboarding Team will go through the Account Verification Process for it, and you'll be notified of any additional information or documents needed to complete verification.
Once verified, you'll get an email so you can start assigning workers to the new entity. 🎉
To create a new workspace:
Click the arrow beside your company name in the upper-left corner of your account.
Click Switch workspace, then Create a workspace.
Enter a name for the new workspace and click Create workspace.
You'll be directed to the new workspace, where you'll fill in and submit the new company's details. Our Onboarding Team will go through the Account Verification Process for the new entity created with it, and you'll be notified of any additional information or documents needed.
Once verified, you'll get an email so you can start onboarding your team to the new workspace. 🎉
