What's New in Onboarding

Onboard your team faster, with full visibility at every step

Updated today

Plane has completely redesigned the onboarding experience. We're excited to bring you improvements that make a real difference in how you hire and support your team.

  • Onboard new hires faster β€” you and your new hire work in parallel from the start, with smarter forms and less back-and-forth

  • Always know where things stand β€” full visibility into every task, who owns it, and what's outstanding

This article walks you through the most important changes you should be aware of.

Workers are invited from the start

As soon as onboarding begins, your new hire receives an invitation to Plane and can start completing their tasks right away β€” no waiting for admin steps to finish first.

Previously, workers were invited partway through onboarding, after several admin steps were complete.

You and your new hire work in parallel

Admin tasks and team member tasks move forward at the same time. There's no handoff. Both sides can make progress independently, which keeps onboarding moving without unnecessary delays.

Previously, onboarding followed a more sequential process. Admins would complete a series of steps first, and workers could only begin after certain tasks were finished.

Less waiting on Plane for international hires

For employees onboarded through EOR, more steps are now automated, so the process keeps moving without needing the Plane team to step in at every stage.

Previously, several steps in the EOR process required manual work by the Plane team before onboarding could continue.

Ask questions without leaving Plane

On review and approval tasks, you can ask questions and leave comments directly inside Plane, and whoever is responsible for that step can reply in the same place. No need to follow up over email or track conversations elsewhere.

Always know where things stand

Every task is visible from the start. You can see what's been completed, what's still outstanding, and what's coming up next. Completed tasks remain visible throughout onboarding, so you can review what was entered at any step.

Previously, completed tasks disappeared once finished, making it difficult to refer back to earlier information.

Real-time compensation and tax previews

Compensation calculations update in real time as you make changes. For international employees, you'll see a full breakdown of total cost, including compensation and employer taxes calculated by country. Where statutory requirements apply, such as 13th and 14th month salary, those are included in the breakdown so you have a complete picture before approving.

When onboarding a U.S. employee, you'll get a preview of the first paycheck, including any prorations based on their start date.

What's staying the same

How you initiate onboarding, assign a start date, collect key information, and get a new hire set up for payroll has not changed. The process is simply better organized and easier to navigate.
