Overview
As part of the new Documents experience in Plane, we’ve introduced improved labels to simplify document organization and make important files easier to find. This includes retiring older document categories and replacing them with the new labels.
Below is a breakdown of the changes, including updated mappings and an explanation of how labels are assigned.
Label changes at a glance
We’ve simplified and standardized our document labels. Here are the most common category changes:
General categories
Previous Category | New Label | Example Documents |
Contracts and legal |
| Employment contracts, contractor agreements, termination agreements |
Invoices |
| Contractor invoices submitted via payment requests. |
Paystubs |
| Earnings statements for international employees. |

| 1099s, W-9s, W-2s, W-4s |
Other | (No label) | Uncategorized uploads |
Documents previously categorized as Employment
Documents categorized under the preivious "Employment" category are now labeled based on document content. We use keyword matching on filenames to assign labels.
Document Type | New Label | Examples |
Offer Summary |
| Offer Summary 2025-07-21 |
Salary Letter |
| Salary increase/change notifications |
Employment Verification |
| Employment verification letters |
Background Check / Right-to-work (RTW) |
| Background check confirmations |

Termination Agreement |

Resignation Letter |
| Voluntary resignation notices |
Other Employment Documents |
| Catch-all for non-classified employment docs |
Note: Some documents may remain unlabeled if the filename doesn’t match known patterns. Manual label editing will be supported in a future update.
What you need to do
You don’t need to take any action. Your documents can be viewed in the New Documents interface.
If you notice documents with missing or incorrect labels, don’t worry — this will be editable soon. In the meantime, feel free to contact us at support@plane.com or use Plane's in-app chat.
